Most founders don’t lack goals. They have too many.
Grow revenue. Launch the new offer. Fix operations. Hire. Post more. Get fit. Every item is reasonable, and together they add up to a quarter where everything moves an inch and nothing moves a mile.
A short-term goal isn’t a wish list with a deadline. It’s a decision about what you will ignore.
Work in ninety days.
A year is too long to feel urgent. A week is too short to build anything real. Ninety days is long enough to change something and short enough that you can’t hide from the result.
Choose one outcome.
One outcome, not five priorities. It should be specific enough that on day ninety the answer is yes or no.
“Grow the business” is a direction. “Sign four Mastery-level clients at full price” is an outcome.
If you can’t choose, ask yourself which result would make the other goals easier or unnecessary. Start there.
Set three commitments.
Outcomes aren’t in your control. Behavior is. Pick the three actions that most reliably produce the outcome, and make them measurable:
- Two sales conversations a week.
- One offer page rewritten and live by day twenty-one.
- Friday afternoons blocked for follow-up. No exceptions.
If you keep the commitments and miss the outcome, you’ve learned something useful. If you skip the commitments, you’ve learned nothing.
Cut something.
Every new goal needs a matching subtraction. Name what you are stopping, pausing, or handing off this quarter. If nothing leaves, the new goal becomes more noise.
Review weekly. Adjust monthly.
Every week, spend fifteen minutes asking two questions: did I keep the three commitments, and what got in the way? Every thirty days, check whether the commitments are still the right ones. Don’t touch the outcome. Change your approach, not the target.
Close the quarter properly.
On day ninety, write down what happened, what worked, and what you’d drop. Then set the next ninety days. Momentum builds from finished quarters, not from ambitious plans.
This week’s action: Write your ninety-day outcome in one sentence. Under it, list three commitments and one thing you’re cutting. If that takes more than twenty minutes, the outcome isn’t clear yet.
